Stepping Aside

Yes, we really are retiring from directing Pictona as of January 1, 2026. It’s been an amazing, wonderful journey for us. You can read the history of Pictona here. We are very proud of the facility, but much prouder of what the facility provides – a place for people to be physically active engaging in a fun, challenging sport and enjoying the friendships and socialization of our members.

Since 2020 when we opened, we’ve seen the sport explode in growth and the level of play improve dramatically. We’ve seen more young people enjoying the sport and more women playing. We’ve seen overweight people shed pounds and many adopt a healthier lifestyle. We are rewarded by observing these changes and knowing that Pictona contributed to them. As our motto states, “It’s more than a game, it’s a lifestyle.”

While we are retiring from the management of Pictona, we are not going away entirely. For us, Pictona is our family, our friends, and our lives. So we’ll be around playing more pickleball and enjoying some free time. We also will continue traveling and photographing this beautiful planet.

We wish to thank all of you who have helped us make Pictona the adventure of a lifetime.

Rainer and Julie Martens

Welcome Chris Nickell
Pictona’s new Executive Director

Pictona’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Nickell as the new executive director of Pictona at Holly Hill. Chris joined Pictona in mid-December and is rapidly becoming familiar with staff and operations. Go here to learn more about Chris. Chris officially begins his leadership duties January 1, 2026.

Pictona hosted the US Senior Pickleball National championships earlier this month with nearly 1000 seniors from across the country. We followed that with the PPA Daytona, where over 1200 players competed alongside the world’s top pickleball pros. The tournament also featured hundreds of juniors who displayed dazzling pickleball skills. Many of our members volunteered in various roles for these two tournaments which garnered praise and thanks from the USSP, PPA, the many players, and from all of us at Pictona.

Now we look forward to another exciting year of tournament pickleball at Pictona. Click here to see our tournament schedule. We are disappointed to announce that the APP decided this week to cancel the tournament scheduled for February 18-22, leaving us no time to plan a replacement. For those of you who are 2.5-3.0 players, we invite you to play in the Rookie Rally January 9-11. Also see our promotion below for the Proton National Tour held here on January 31 and February 1.

Pictona hosted nearly 1,000 players for the USSP Nationals from December 5 - 8. Everyone was expecting four sunny days of pickleball competition but Mother Nature had other plans! The rain forced a majority of matches under cover but did not stop our amazing staff, Pictona volunteers, and players from having an incredible week. All brackets and matches still got played in spite of the rain - 2,382 matches to be exact!

Players traveled from:

  • 38 different states
  • Top 5 U.S. States represented:
  • Florida, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, Michigan
  • 2 different Canadian provinces (6 players)
  • Stockholm, Sweden (1 player)

See below for the gender/age breakdown:

And meet 91 year old Canadian, Sylvia Mergl - USSP GOLD Medalist!

Most people slow down at 91, but Sylvia Mergl, having been an avid tennis player until she was 90, learned to play pickleball, fell completely in love with the game and prefers it over tennis! Way to GO!
