UPDATE FROM RAINER: Your Pictona staff has been working feverishly to prepare for some exciting improvements at Pictona. I'll list them briefly here and we'll be telling you much more about them in the next two weeks.
Court Monitors: We hope you have seen the two monitors that show all 49 courts. One is located at P1 by the entry door to the courts and the other on the P2 stadium wall when you enter from the east side. We are making adjustments to the camera angles and the order of rotation for viewing the courts. Next we will connect the Court Monitor to the internet so you can see the courts anywhere you have internet access.
Turnstile: The turnstile at P2 has been very trying. We apologize for the inconvenience that the turnstile has created when it did not function properly. It is now working, but some improvements need to be made. Note this: When you enter through the turnstile, you STILL MUST SCAN YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD.
Court Use: We've been studying court usage throughout the spring and summer. We've heard your concerns and suggestions for improvements. Beginning October 1 we will arrange for court play by skill level. We'll tell you much more about these changes in a forthcoming special edition of Pictona News.
We've been working for weeks on redesigning and updating the website. We have thought carefully about how to best present the substantial amount of information that keeps members and others updated. We'll release the website next Friday, September, 26.
Lastly, Julie and I will be retiring as of January 1. The Pictona Board is searching for a new Executive Director. Julie and I have been working for Pictona as volunteers since 2018. Now it is time for new leadership. |

Lynette started playing pickleball three years ago when a good friend kept encouraging her to try it. The moment she stepped on the court, she was hooked! Pickleball turned out to be the perfect blend of social fun, friendly competition, and just the right amount of exercise. Since then, she has played two-four times per week and is enjoying the incredible community that comes with it.
After joining the Board in 2025 she shared, "As a board member at Pictona, I'm excited to help grow this amazing sport and create a welcoming space for players of all levels. Whether you're picking up a paddle for the first time or just looking for a great way to stay active and connected, pickleball truly has something for everyone."

Pictona lost a kind, gentle soul this past week. Jordan Ferrell’s death shocked our pickleball community and we collectively grieve his loss. We send our sincere sympathy to the Ferrell family.
Please join Pictona staff and members on Friday, July 25 at 6pm in the stadium court. We will offer a few words in Jordan's honor and celebrate as he would have loved - playing pickleball together, sharing stories, and filling the court with the laughter he brought to us all.

The party begins with a Friday evening buffet and is followed by the Pictona Pentathlon! The pentathlon will consist of five recreation court games (see below) aimed at providing time for members to socialize and have a blast! However, since we are all competitive...winners will be crowned!
The Jamboree continues on Saturday with a full-day Member-Only pickleball tournament to crown the Pictona champions in women and men’s doubles (no mixed or singles). There will be 5 age categories and 4 skill levels. And it’s all FREE.

Why are those strangers drilling holes in our buildings and around campus?
They are installing the wiring for 12 cameras that will give you a view of all 49 courts. It’s our new court monitoring system. It will provide you with access via the internet to view what’s happening on our courts.
Are players present? Are the courts playable? You’ll be able to call up Pictona’s Court Monitoring system on your computer or mobile device to see all the courts. We’ll also have a monitor on the wall by court 3 and on the building by the Championship Court. The screen will display 4 camera views at one time and rotate every few seconds to see the 3 screens showing all 12 courts.
It's another amenity to make Pictona a better place.
Update on West Entrance Access at Pictona 2
To help reduce labor costs, we’ve installed a turnstile at the West Entrance of Pictona 2. Once the system is fully operational, the Welcome Desk in that area will no longer be staffed.
Members will enter by inputting their membership number at the turnstile and then scanning their card to record attendance.
We expect the turnstile to be fully functional within the next two weeks. Until then, access at the West Entrance will be limited to select hours—primarily in the mornings and evenings.

Note: The turnstile will always allow players to exit at any time.

Novice Mixers
Mondays, 5 - 8 pm

When you arrive at the courts for a MIXER, you will be given a PLAYER NUMBER. There will be a printed game schedule that shows the assigned player numbers at each court. They will play 6 competitive games.
NOVICE Mixers will be played on courts 37-44, Sundays from 9-11am and Wednesdays from 6-8pm. Participants will play 5 competitive games. All players are required to STOP AT WELCOME DESK to CHECK IN for these events.

We had 151 volunteer shifts filled by 84 volunteers accounting for 577 total hours.

We’re thrilled to welcome Scott Thornton as our new Education Director—a powerhouse in racket sports and a visionary in facility management. With a Master of Arts in Sports Administration from Delaware State University, Scott brings over a decade of hands-on leadership experience, championing innovation and community impact across the sports landscape.
At Pickleball House, LLC, he has overseen the complete buildout of a state-of-the-art indoor pickleball facility and managed all day-to-day operations. His tenure at the City of Orlando's Tennis Centre saw him lead a team to win the Racket Sports Industry's Park & Recreation Agency of the Year award in 2020.
Scott's passion for community service is highlighted by his role as the founder and Executive Director of The G.O.A.L. Foundation, Inc., a non-profit program that has served over 8,500 at-risk youth. His commitment to fostering a positive environment for both staff and participants has made him a respected figure in the sports community.

Pictona would like to recognize Gloria Gilpatrick as the June Pictona Volunteer of the Month. Gloria began volunteering at Pictona during the Pictona Challenge checking in players for the event. She enjoyed the experience so much she offered to expand her availability to other volunteer opportunities during the tournament. At the most recent MLP Daytona pro tournament, Gloria volunteered every day of the four day event, including multiple shifts, for a total of 29 hours of volunteer support. This class strengthens the core and the lower extremities, while promoting flexibility to ultimately improving balance and gait.
Attendees will also be exposed to complimentary meditative practice, and guided imagery designed to enhance and strengthen their cognition and ability to employ mindfulness.

We would like to thank the 374 youngsters who participated in our 6th annual MetroHealth Super Seniors Tournament played May 2-4, 2025 at Pictona. The weather was fine for the women’s doubles played on Friday, May 2, and again on Saturday, May 3 for mixed doubles. Sunday morning we awoke to rain and a forecast for rain throughout the day. We were able to continue playing under the 13 covered courts but with a shortened schedule of games. About 11 am a patch of blue appeared out of the northwest sky. Our efficient maintenance crew rolled out the 4 VAPTRS to dry 20 courts in about 45 minutes. We restored the regular schedule of games and completed the day in glorious sunshine.

For those lucky enough to get into the recent US Open Pickleball tournament in Naples, FL last week, it was a ton of fun! We’re not sure of all the Pictona members who played in the Biggest Pickleball Party in the World with 3500 players, but we do know some!

We know Pickleball is fun, competitive, improves cardiovascular and physical health, but did you know that pickleball has a positive impact on mental health as well?
A new report from Apple investigated the health benefits of pickleball using data gathered from Apple Watch users who opted into the study and found that playing pickleball is also associated with lower rates of self-reported depression. One of the many reasons is that Pickleball allows players to connect with varying ages, levels and backgrounds, providing an opportunity to stay connected with family and friends, develop new relationships and foster a sense of belonging!

GARDNER WANTED Hydroponic Garden in Aetna Gardens
We are looking for a volunteer to manage our hydroponic garden located in the Aetna Gardens. The Garden provides leafy vegetables to our Kitchen. Russ Royce, our fantastic gardener who set up the hydroponic garden and has overseen it these past 5 years, is retiring. Russ will provide the training for maintaining the hydroponic garden which requires about 3 hours per week. Two-Handed Backhand Pickleball Lesson at Pictona
The perfect opportunity for players looking to add power, topspin, disguise an
d control to their game.
This lesson is taught by Doug Simmons, who specializes in the two-handed backhand! Doug was a Division 1, Midwest tennis player/instructor, who reached a career high of #1 in Midwest, and #30 Nationally. He enjoys competing in Pictona singles tournaments, and since switching from tennis to pickle ball in 2022; has amassed10 medals, (4 Gold), playing 4.5/5.0 singles, all at Pictona!!
The session begins with a brief warm-up and description of grips, swing pattern, dominant hand, directional change, and proper footwork.
Doug breaks down the mechanics step by step, using demonstrations, visual aids, analogies, and individual feedback to help everyone lock in the fundamentals.

What an incredible day at Pictona! We had the pleasure of hosting over 180 guests from Brown & Brown for a fun-filled pickleball event that had it all — beginner instruction, a round robin tournament, open play, plenty of food and drinks, and nonstop laughter. It was a fantastic way to introduce so many new faces to the sport we love while building connections and community. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a success!

We have an unknown number of Private Groups that have formed to conduct play among our members. Private groups must have 8 members, a coordinator or leader, and play regularly. Some use TeamReach or other software to communicate with their group members.
We are enthused about these groups because they organize play in various ways, matching up players by gender, age, skill level, and recreational/competitive motives. We would like to facilitate the play of Private Groups by registering them so they can reserve courts. Soon we will post a listing describing the characteristics of each group on our website. We are contacting the groups that we know about to complete a questionnaire and inviting the leaders of the unknown groups to contact Jayna Ryan at Jaynar@Pictona.org so they can register.
Private Groups may be open or closed to membership. Each group decides. Membership in any group is free; no fees may be charged. Individuals may belong to multiple groups. If you are not a member of a Private Group, but would like to be, when you see a group playing ask about opportunities to join. Or start your own group.

Join us at Pictona for an evening of competitive pickleball action during our Open Seeded Ladder event, exclusively designed for players with skill levels ranging from 2.5 to 3.99. Prepare to showcase your prowess and engage in a thrilling Pictona Intramural event that pairs participants with like-skilled partners, regardless of gender.

Novice Mixer (1.0-2.49 Skill Level)
Wednesdays, 6 - 8 pm
Sundays, 9 - 11 am
When you arrive at the courts for a MIXER, you will be given a PLAYER NUMBER. There will be a printed game schedule that shows the assigned player numbers at each court. They will play 6 competitive games.
NOVICE Mixers will be played on courts 37-44, Sundays from 9-11am and Wednesdays from 6-8pm. Participants will play 5 competitive games. All players are required to STOP AT WELCOME DESK to CHECK IN for these events.
