Pictona hosted the US Senior Pickleball National championships earlier this month with nearly 1000 seniors from across the country. We followed that with the PPA Daytona, where over 1200 players competed alongside the world’s top pickleball pros. The tournament also featured hundreds of juniors who displayed dazzling pickleball skills. Many of our members volunteered in various roles for these two tournaments which garnered praise and thanks from the USSP, PPA, the many players, and from all of us at Pictona.
Now we look forward to another exciting year of tournament pickleball at Pictona. Click here to see our tournament schedule. We are disappointed to announce that the APP decided this week to cancel the tournament scheduled for February 18-22, leaving us no time to plan a replacement. For those of you who are 2.5-3.0 players, we invite you to play in the Rookie Rally January 9-11. Also see our promotion below for the Proton National Tour held here on January 31 and February 1.

We're excited to offer Rookie Rally 2026 in January!
Registration ends January 5th!
The Rookie Rally 2026 is an opportunity for the newer player to play others at the 2.5 and 3.0 skill level in a fun round robin format. Team up with your partner to play men's, women's, and mixed doubles.

Pictona hosted nearly 1,000 players for the USSP Nationals from December 5 - 8. Everyone was expecting four sunny days of pickleball competition but Mother Nature had other plans! The rain forced a majority of matches under cover but did not stop our amazing staff, Pictona volunteers, and players from having an incredible week. All brackets and matches still got played in spite of the rain - 2,382 matches to be exact!

| "Pickleball saved my life, in more ways than one!"
The day Kim Moneyhun ended up on life support was an otherwise typical day. Her pickleball team league was beginning and Kim and her teammates had arranged to scrimmage at the local rec center after lunch. The group was familiar with one another as players, a few were better friends, but all were about to save Kim’s life. Read about Kim's medical emergency and how her pickleball community saved her life on the court and the weeks that followed by stepping up to take care of Kim and husband, Jim. |

We Did It!
Thanks to Pictona members, the City of Holly Hill, the area community, and Rainer & Julie Martens, Holly Hill Mayor John Penny’s Challenge has been met…and exceeded! A check for $30,000 was presented on Saturday, November 22 to the local Food Bridge Pantry, an affiliate of Second Harvest Food Bank. The exciting thing about this donation is that it equates to $150,000 worth of food through the Second Harvest Food Bank – FIVE times the amount of our check. We’re thrilled that we can help provide food for those in need during these uncertain times.
The Food Bridge Pantry is a ministry of First Church of Holly Hill. In December 2011, Chuck McKeown, former Senior Pastor, and his son, Matt stepped in to save the program from a neighboring church whose pastor had passed away. “We were afraid if we didn't move it to our place, it would just go away. After we got involved with them, it became very clear it was something that was needed.” Their mission was simple: to put food into the hands of working families, senior citizens and veterans. Within two years, their food pantry was the largest single site pantry in Volusia County that receives food from Second Harvest (other than Halifax Urban ministries' 5 locations). Matt McKeown is now the Senior Pastor and Chuck has since retired, but has never been busier or happier! The families they have touched are countless, and each one counts!
On Monday mornings, the Food Bridge Pantry warehouse on State Street is a bustle of activity preparing for its drive through food banks, delivery to 5 other food bank locations, and supplying food to Solutions by the Sea, a sober living community for men.
"My family was in need. We were struggling and the only hard part was to have courage to ask for help. We received no judgement and no stern talking to. It was just love and compassion. It was then that I brought my first pantry bag home to feed my husband and two small children. Since then, our lives have been a mixture of EBT, pantry bags, turkey baskets for the holidays and the generosity of others. But since that time, we have also been able to give back. We have had the opportunity to donate items as well as time to serve others." ~ Recipient of food bank donations.

Two amazing athletes from the Halifax Health | Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation program showed incredible courage and determination at the Pictona Open by Emerge Insurance Services Pickleball tournament. One, a stroke survivor, and the other, living with Parkinson’s, competed against able-bodied players in their age group. Though they didn’t take home the win, their confidence, resilience, and passion for the sport truly made them champions on and off the court. Pictured with them is Chris Nave, employee with Brooks Rehabilitation and an instructor at Pictona.
Brooks Rehabilitation offers the most comprehensive adaptive sports and recreation program in the country, providing fun and fitness for people of all ages living with a physical disability. Program participants can enjoy competitive or recreational team and individual sports, plus a variety of other wellness and fitness activities.
A study by Physical Therapists from Midwestern University and Creighton University reported positive effects of physical activity like pickleball for Parkinson's patients. Following the six-week study, patients reported:
Some patients even reported that they forgot that they had Parkinson’s while engaged in playing Pickleball.

A Smashing Success
6th Annual Pictona Open
Sponsored by Emerge Insurance Services

| Over 4 days (October 23-26, 2025) 741 players ranging in age from 10 years to 85 played 1925 matches mostly in sunshine with a bit of breeze from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Only in the final hours on Sunday did the weather woman show us some moisture, but we completed the tournament under Pictona’s 13 covered courts without having to shorten any matches.
Players praised the tournament format which consisted of 88 divisions playing on pods of 2-4 courts followed by a playoff of 4 teams in each division. Pod managers kept games moving along and our team of referees were able to referee most medal matches. The quality of play was outstanding among the 449 male and 292 female players who came not only from Florida but 26 other states. Sportsmanship was high and injuries low. We enjoyed giving 213 gold medals, 177 silver medals, and 150 bronze medals for a total of 540 medals. It takes a coordinated team to conduct a successful tournament. A shout out to Scott Thornton, tournament manager, who was ably assisted by former tournament manager Bob Panzak who returned from Vermont for this event. Nick Kovacs is our Volunteer Coordinator who was blessed with the services of 93 volunteers contributing a total of 553 hours. Our Referee Coordinator was Robbie Walton who assigned 14 referees to the matches. Members of Pictona’s staff who played a significant but less visible part in the tournament included Angie Gustafson, operations director, Gregg Sibigtroth, facilities director, Deb Christensen, exhibit coordinator, and Chris Stahler, marketing director. We thank all of you, especially our wonderful volunteers who make Pictona’s tournaments affordable and successful. We hasten to add our appreciation to Emerge Insurance Servicesfor their sponsorship of this tournament as well as our March 2026 Pictona Challenge tournament. Julie and Rainer Martens, Pictona co-directors |

BIG THANK YOU TO OUR TOURNAMENT SPONSOR & EXHIBITORS! Emerge Insurance Services bridges the gap when the unexpected happens and your deductible hasn't been met. Don't let a broken bone cost you an arm and a leg! |

Many of Pictona’s repeat tournament players will recognize William S. Boddie, who goes by GOAT, by his snowy white beard, contagiously positive personality and his colorful apparel donned with his self-titled nickname.
Goat, originally from Alabama, spent over 20 years as a military officer and another 20+ years as a professor of Transformational Leadership at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. He and his wife live in St. Johns, FL, where he started playing pickleball a little over 3 years ago. His golf buddies miss him but can’t seem to convince him to head back to the links! He loves that pickleball provides an opportunity for quick response play, cardiovascular exercise and most of all an outlet for fun and community. Goat is devoted to improving his game and drills with a ball machine a couple of times per week.
His hard work paid off last week when he and Nick Caruso, whom he met when volunteering at Pictona, took Gold at the Pictona Open in Men’s Doubles 3.5, 65+ age group. They won the first game 11-5, went down on the second game 11-9 but then rallied and beat their opponents in the final match 11-6.
Congrats Goat and Nick! We look forward to seeing you at the next tournament!

Court Monitoring
At last, our long-awaited court monitoring system is fully in place.
We installed 12 cameras to provide a view of every court, all 49. If you have been on campus, you likely have seen the two monitors, one mounted on the P1 wall by court 3 and the other on the wall inside the stadium by the Championship Court. The screen is divided into quadrants showing 4 camera views and rotates through three screens to see all 12 camera views and then repeats.
Now we introduce Pictona.Live. You can view the courts from anywhere you can access the internet. You want to know how busy the courts are or whether the courts are dry, just enter Pictona.Live into your browser and select the courts you want to view. You will also find the link to Pictona.Live in the right column of our website’s homepage.
We hope you enjoy this new service. We thank our IT wizard Mark Brigandi for setting up the system.

UPDATE FROM RAINER: Your Pictona staff has been working feverishly to prepare for some exciting improvements at Pictona. I'll list them briefly here and we'll be telling you much more about them in the next two weeks.
Court Monitors: We hope you have seen the two monitors that show all 49 courts. One is located at P1 by the entry door to the courts and the other on the P2 stadium wall when you enter from the east side. We are making adjustments to the camera angles and the order of rotation for viewing the courts. Next we will connect the Court Monitor to the internet so you can see the courts anywhere you have internet access.
Turnstile: The turnstile at P2 has been very trying. We apologize for the inconvenience that the turnstile has created when it did not function properly. It is now working, but some improvements need to be made. Note this: When you enter through the turnstile, you STILL MUST SCAN YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD.
Court Use: We've been studying court usage throughout the spring and summer. We've heard your concerns and suggestions for improvements. Beginning October 1 we will arrange for court play by skill level. We'll tell you much more about these changes in a forthcoming special edition of Pictona News.
We've been working for weeks on redesigning and updating the website. We have thought carefully about how to best present the substantial amount of information that keeps members and others updated. We'll release the website next Friday, September, 26.
Lastly, Julie and I will be retiring as of January 1. The Pictona Board is searching for a new Executive Director. Julie and I have been working for Pictona as volunteers since 2018. Now it is time for new leadership. |

Lynette Bowman, Secretary
Lynette started playing pickleball three years ago when a good friend kept encouraging her to try it. The moment she stepped on the court, she was hooked! Pickleball turned out to be the perfect blend of social fun, friendly competition, and just the right amount of exercise. Since then, she has played two-four times per week and is enjoying the incredible community that comes with it.
After joining the Board in 2025 she shared, "As a board member at Pictona, I'm excited to help grow this amazing sport and create a welcoming space for players of all levels. Whether you're picking up a paddle for the first time or just looking for a great way to stay active and connected, pickleball truly has something for everyone."
Lynette is married to Scott, has two grown sons, and a new daughter-in-law who all enjoy playing pickleball. She will become a Mimi to twins later this year! |

Pictona lost a kind, gentle soul this past week. Jordan Ferrell’s death shocked our pickleball community and we collectively grieve his loss. We send our sincere sympathy to the Ferrell family.
Please join Pictona staff and members on Friday, July 25 at 6pm in the stadium court. We will offer a few words in Jordan's honor and celebrate as he would have loved - playing pickleball together, sharing stories, and filling the court with the laughter he brought to us all.

Why are those strangers drilling holes in our buildings and around campus?
They are installing the wiring for 12 cameras that will give you a view of all 49 courts. It’s our new court monitoring system. It will provide you with access via the internet to view what’s happening on our courts.
Are players present? Are the courts playable? You’ll be able to call up Pictona’s Court Monitoring system on your computer or mobile device to see all the courts. We’ll also have a monitor on the wall by court 3 and on the building by the Championship Court. The screen will display 4 camera views at one time and rotate every few seconds to see the 3 screens showing all 12 courts.
It's another amenity to make Pictona a better place.

Update on West Entrance Access at Pictona 2
To help reduce labor costs, we’ve installed a turnstile at the West Entrance of Pictona 2. Once the system is fully operational, the Welcome Desk in that area will no longer be staffed.
Members will enter by inputting their membership number at the turnstile and then scanning their card to record attendance.
We expect the turnstile to be fully functional within the next two weeks. Until then, access at the West Entrance will be limited to select hours—primarily in the mornings and evenings.
For the latest updates, please check the Pictona or Court Reserve app.
Note: The turnstile will always allow players to exit at any time.
