Pictona News in Pickleball Paradise

Header for the Pictona News bi-weekly newsletter. Two gray palm trees at opposite ends of the frame, Pictona logo of a pickleball swish and lettering "Pictona News Pickleball Paradise."

Two amazing athletes from the Halifax Health | Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation program showed incredible courage and determination at the Pictona Open by Emerge Insurance Services Pickleball tournament. One, a stroke survivor, and the other, living with Parkinson’s, competed against able-bodied players in their age group. Though they didn’t take home the win, their confidence, resilience, and passion for the sport truly made them champions on and off the court. Pictured with them is Chris Nave, employee with Brooks Rehabilitation and an instructor at Pictona.

Brooks Rehabilitation offers the most comprehensive adaptive sports and recreation program in the country, providing fun and fitness for people of all ages living with a physical disability. Program participants can enjoy competitive or recreational team and individual sports, plus a variety of other wellness and fitness activities.

A study by Physical Therapists from Midwestern University and Creighton University reported positive effects of physical activity like pickleball for Parkinson's patients. Following the six-week study, patients reported:

  • Improved social interactions
  • Enjoyment of the sport’s camaraderie and competition
  • Improved cognitive skills

Some patients even reported that they forgot that they had Parkinson’s while engaged in playing Pickleball.

Brooks Rehab sponsored programs offered at Pictona:

  • Motion & Mindfulness I Mondays I 2:30 - 3:30 pm
  • Pickleball I Wednesdays I 1:30 - 2:30 pm
  • Balance Blast I Thursdays I 11:15 am - 12: 15 pm

Due to the federal shutdown, SNAP is only being partially funded for November - this is driving higher demand at food banks. It has been reported that lines at area food banks have tripled. Our neighbors' hunger can’t wait, and this is where we need your help for our community.

Let’s help The City of Holly Hill and Mayor Penny meet the goal of $25,000 - Donate by NOVEMBER 20TH!

Pictona’s own Rainer and Julie Martens have just stepped up with a $10,000 match! That means every $50 you give TODAY becomes $100 worth of groceries TOMORROW. Pictona will deliver a check on November 22nd to our local Food Bridge Pantry (affiliate of Second Harvest Food Bank). $25,000 equals $125,000 in food for those in need.

Donate HERE or bring a check made out to Pictona to Pictona’s Welcome Desk with “Mayor’s Challenge” on memo line.

FIRST COAST HEARING CLINIC

We’re thrilled to announce that First Coast Hearing Clinic is a proud sponsor of Pictona at Holly Hill. Located in Palm Coast, St. Augustine and Ormond Beach, First Coast Hearing Clinic brings industry-leading hearing care to our region—with advanced technology, personalized service, and a patient-first ethos.

Why This Partnership Matters

At Pictona, we believe pickleball isn’t just about the paddle and the point—it’s about the full experience: hearing the score and line calls, the social conversations around you, the ambient energy of the Pictona campus abuzz with play and camaraderie. With First Coast Hearing Clinic onboard, we’re enhancing another dimension of the game for many of our players—because crystal-clear hearing matters.

How Hearing Health Benefits Pickleball Players

Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a weekend warrior, there are important hearing-health benefits to consider:

  • Enhanced spatial awareness & communication: On the court, hearing the ball pop, the feet shuffle, your partner call “mine!”—these auditory cues help you react faster and coordinate smoother. Studies show that individuals with hearing assistance report improved situational awareness in active settings.
  • Better enjoyment and social connection: Pickleball is as much social as athletic. Being able to hear your partner and opponents, banter from the sideline, or post-match chatter means you stay connected—not sidelined.
  • Protection for your long-term hearing health: Modern hearing aids and protection strategies address sweat, moisture, and movement—key for active players.
  • Safe, inclusive play: For players with any level of hearing loss, appropriate hearing solutions mean no one has to opt-out of the fun—or forfeit competitive edge.

What First Coast Hearing Clinic Offers Pictona Members

  • A full hearing-screening and consultation specifically tailored for active, sport-involved lifestyles. First Coast Hearing Clinic emphasizes lifestyle when recommending technology.
  • Durable, sweat- and moisture-resistant hearing technologies and accessories that withstand movement and outdoor conditions.
  • Rapid follow-up care and adaptive fittings—because hearing needs can change, and so can your game.
  • Convenient local access at the three regional clinic locations, making it simple for Pictona members to test, fit, and maintain their hearing solutions.

A Note to Our Community

If your game is your passion, your hearing is part of the performance. Whether you’re hearing the pop of the pickleball or the applause of the crowd, we want you fully immersed in every rally, every cheers, every moment. Thanks to First Coast Hearing Clinic, Pictona members and guests have a trusted partner to ensure their hearing health keeps pace with their play.

We encourage you to schedule a complimentary hearing-screening at FCHC and be sure to mention you’re a Pictona member.
