Skill Level Open Play

Skill Level Open Play

When the courts for Scheduled Skill Level Play are not reserved and are not scheduled for other play options, we encourage players of that skill level to use those courts for Open Play. The rules for the paddle rack system are here.

Open Play is available on designated courts based on skill level. It is for doubles play if people are waiting to play. Singles may be played when no one is waiting. Alternatively, players who wish to play singles may reserve a court or find a court not scheduled for any other play.

Go to the courts designated for your skill level. A sign indicating the courts for each Skill Level is located next to the paddle rack mounted on the fence.

If no one is using a court, anyone can play on the court. If the Open Play courts are all being used, then players are to use the Paddle Rack system to wait their turn for the next available court. When playing on an Open Play court, players may play one game to 11, win by two, and then must vacate the court and return to the paddle rack.

Pictona uses the following 4 skill levels:

  • Novice (3.0 and under)
  • Intermediate (3.0 to 3.5)
  • Intermediate Plus (3.5 to 3.9)
  • Advanced (4.0+)
  • Go here to do a self-evaluation of your skill rating if you do not have one. If you find the play too easy or too difficult, move to the courts that more accurately reflect your skill level.
  • When too few players are present at your designated skill courts to play a game, move to the next higher or lower skill court to match up.
  • Managers on Duty will make recommendations to players to move to an appropriate skill court when players repeatedly play at skill-designated courts that are above or below their skill level.
  • Skill-designated courts are open to anyone when no paddles are in the rack for those courts.
